Volunteer Role Description – Wheels for Choice
Sexual Health Options, Resources & Education Centre (SHORE) is seeking outgoing, friendly, feminist individuals to join our team as Wheels for Choice Volunteers. Wheels for Choice Volunteers improve access for individuals who need transportation or accompaniment assistance to and from abortion appointments within and outside of the Waterloo Region. There are two type of Wheels for Choice Volunteers, driver and/or support person.
Commitment: Available for short notice and sporadic requests. Shifts may last up to 8 hours total, depending on clinic location and appointment type. Volunteers are not required to accompany clients into the clinic.
Availability: Flexible
Location: Based on client address and clinic
Responsibilities of Wheels for Choice Drivers:
- Respond to requests for client rides from SHORE’s Clinic Manager
- Confirm travel arrangements with client(s) by client preferred method
- Offer minimal assistance to get clients in and out of the car (no lifting permitted)
- Follow safe driving procedures and all sections of the Highway Traffic Act
- Become familiar with the programs and services provided by the agency and share these resources as appropriate
- Submit required forms regularly
- Provide up-to-date license and insurance information
- Adhere to all SHORE Centre policies, procedures, standards and guidelines including client confidentiality and our 100% smoke free policy
Responsibilities of Wheels for Choice Support People:
- Respond to requests for client rides from SHORE’s Clinic Manager
- Meet the client at the clinic and provide support as needed
- Become familiar with the programs and services provided by the agency and share these resources as appropriate
- Submit required forms regularly
- Adhere to all SHORE Centre policies, procedures, standards and guidelines including client confidentiality
Requirements of all Wheels for Choice Drivers:
- Enjoy driving
- Valid G driver’s license with 3 or fewer demerit points and an acceptable driving record
- Uncertified 3-Year Driver Record
- Minimum of $1 million third party liability insurance on vehicle
- Completion of a criminal reference check within acceptable standards
- Access to a well-maintained, 100% smoke-free vehicle
Requirements for all Wheels for Choice Volunteers:
- Pro-choice
- Excellent communication skills; outgoing, approachable, friendly, and engaging
- Comfortable with responding to basic questions about SHORE Centre, sexual health, pregnancy options, and contraception (all covered in our training)
- Friendly, compassionate and sensitive to issues facing people undergoing an abortion procedure
- Ability to set and maintain healthy and professional boundaries
- Agree to SHORE’s Policies and Procedures and sign a confidentiality agreement
Requisite Training:
- SHORE Centre onboarding process and training modules
- Attend volunteer meetings as required
